Centre for Information Technology (CIT), established in 1999 is one of the major resource centers in the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuwan University that provides Internet facility to the students and faculties of Institute of Engineering as well as to Tribhuwan University. In addition, CIT strives to produce quality software in the country for local and international market and also provides specialized training in any field of IT sector.

About

In addition, CIT strives to produce quality software in the country for local and international market and also provides specialized training in any field of IT sector.

Objectives

One of the major objectives of CIT is to create a well-equipped environment for development activities related with Information Technology. CIT owns a large number of computers and VSAT station to provide Internet facilities to the students and faculties of IOE. With all the facilities, CIT is one of the best research centers for IT sector in the country.

Besides these the noteworthy objectives are as follows:

  1. To produce quality software in the country for local and international market.
  2. To provide specialized training in any field of information adn Communication Technology(ICT).
  3. To carry out research and development works related to ICT.
  4. To provide consultancy services related to ICT.
  5. To provide a meaningful contribution towards the promotion, development and improvement of the standard and quality of lower, middle and higher engineering education in the field of ICT.
  6. To provide sustainable support for the integration of higher engineering education with ICT related research activities.
  7. To establish mutual relationship with foreign universities and conduct different activities to achieve the goal of the center.
  8. To provide Internet Service through VSAT/ Networking for the information flow.
  9. To assist in building the national capability in various aspects of the ICT.
  10. To increase the capability of technical and managerial personnel involved in the ICT and assist in its effective utilization and mobilization.

Infrastructure

CIT has its own VSAT terminal and equipment for Internet connectivity, optical fiber backbone within Pulchowk Campus premises and large computing facilities. CIT have about 100 computers that are decicated for internet facilities. With all the facilities, CIT is one of the best research centers for IT sector in the country.

WING

Web, Internet and Networking Group (WING @ CIT)

The Web, Internet and Networking Group (WING) in Center for Information Technology, Pulchowk Campus at Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University is diverseboth in its coverage of areas and in the nature of activities undertaken.

Eligibility:
IOE faculties and graduateas well as undergraduate students who are interest in conducting various ICT realted works voluntarily.

Working areas include:
Internet and Intranet development, web applications, website designing and development, LAN management, WAN implementation, MIS etc.

Its primary roles are:
  • to provide technical services to CIT and IOE on all aspects of web, internet and networking.
  • to create a discussion forum for web, internet and networking matters within the community represented by CIT/IOE.
  • to establish working teams to investigate specific issues on web, internet and networking identified by CIT/IOE.

    Internet:

    Centre for Information Technology (CIT) has total dedicated bandwidth of 20/20Mbps. CIT is providing fully dedicated wired and wireless internet facility to the hostels, all the departments and staff housing of Pulchowk campus.

    Email:

    Students as well as staffs of the pulchowk campus can easily obtain an email id with domain name ioe.edu.np (for example, abc@ioe.edu.np).

    Entrance Examination:

    CIT is providing all the technical supports to conduct online entrance examination for diploma, BE and M Sc. entrance examinations. CIT, not only helps to conduct entrance examination for engineering level but also supports for medical and nursing entrance examinations.

    Consultancy Services:

    CIT is also ready to provide consultancy services related to computer network/system to the constituent campuses as well as to the T.U. affiliated engineering colleges.

    Lab and Research:

    CIT is providing internet facility to the students through its internet labs from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm every days (except saturday and public holidays).It has also plan to conduct innovation and research classes on various emerging technologies.

    Web hosting:

    CIT is providing web hosting services through its own servers.

    Training:

    CIT is providing various basic and advanced training packages of skill development training related to networking, web development, system administration and wireless administration.

    Policies

    The Center for Information Technology has a number of policies, guidelines and suggestions for the use of information technology on campus. These policies are reviewed on a regular basis and updated as needed. Key policies are listed below.

    1. The CIT members will automatically get the CIT email account.
    2. As long as their account is active, the members can access Internet.
    3. Local LAN users cannot use the same account for dial-up. To have both, they need to pay extra amount according to the CIT rule.
    4. For BE students the time allocated for a month is 40 hours and for Masters students it is 90 hours.
    5. If account holders are not able to finish their allocated time within one month, the remaining time will freeze (it will not be appended to the next month).And if allocated time is over before a month, then users need to pay extra charge to activate account.

    RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR USING INTERNET COMPUTING IN CIT (IOE)

    1. The entire user must be the student of IOE and valid account holder. You may be requested to provide valid ID for account holding information and CIT staff may ask for valid account holding information at any time.
    2. All the account holding students are allowed to use Internet computing facilities in Room No: 101, 102, and 103.
    3. All the account holding students will bear the responsibility to keep password secret. CIT will not be responsible for misuse of account due to password theft or any other reasons. In the event of misuse of account by other than account holder, account holder should contact immediately with system administrator for appropriate measures.
    4. CIT has provided Internet facility for purely educational purpose. It is always requested to the user to keep the computing environment noise free and group discussion is strictly prohibited in the computing room.
    5. No obscene materials whether in Text or Graphical format is entertained in computing rooms.
    6. Smoking, eating and drinking is strictly prohibited.

    SUGGESTIONS

    1. Always log off your account while you are away.
    2. For your own security keep on changing your password frequently.
    3. Be always cautious to share your account with your friends. Some one can commit crime in Internet using your account.

    The users are requested to change proxy setting to 10.100.0.1 and port 8080 to run internet in the CIT internet labs.
